Shop on Thanksgiving? Heck yeah! Let me tell you why.

Most of the concerns about Thanksgiving Day shopping revolve around the people who have to work and miss out on valuable family time. I think others just hate that we are rushing into an already over commercialized holiday. I have a different view on this matter:

Most of the people I know who work retail want to work on Thanksgiving. Really! They get time and ½ holiday pay, and by 5 or 6pm the valuable family time is shared comatose hours stretched out on the couch waiting for a football game to start. Another perk – the chances of them being thrown into the early morning mayhem of Black Friday decrease as well.

I think it’s interesting that we have this outpouring of pity for retail workers on this day when there are many other places requiring employees to work: hospitals, military, police, gas stations, toll roads, and online shopping to name a few. My dad is a veterinarian, we hardly ever had an uninterrupted holiday. (By the way – do not give turkey bones to your animals!)

I looked into the spending last year and realized that adding that extra few hours of shopping did not affect Black Friday or online spending. We’re just helping our flagging economy. Commercialism is a disease already spread, adding on a day of shopping is not going to fan any flames that are not already at their height. Personally I’m trying for homemade gifts this year…but more on that later.

I don’t want to under value what Thanksgiving is. I feel it’s important to celebrate a day where being thankful is paramount. But it is not a sacred day, not like Christmas, or Easter, or Sunday. Yes, that final day of the weekend that has been trampled on and forgotten by so many. Nobody gets up in arms about people having to work on the Sabbath day – but mention Thanksgiving and all heck breaks loose.

Plus I think getting out of the house after consuming 3000 to 4000 calories might be a good thing. Walk around the mall with the family instead of staring at a TV screen, more talking can happen with the walking. Feel sorry for the workers? Take them a thank you card, or just tell them you appreciate their sacrifice, make it fun! Do reverse mall trick –or-treating and take each worker a piece of candy.

If you’re one of the people required to work and really didn’t want to, I am sorry. That sucks.
