Don’t hate me because I don’t vaccinate.

1195430027523255246zeimusu_Hypodermic.svg.medIn July 1978 The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints published an article about immunizing, part of which reads,

“We urge members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to protect their own children through immunization. Then they may wish to join other public-spirited citizens in efforts to eradicate                                     ignorance and apathy that have caused the disturbingly low levels of childhood immunization.

I want to start with that because it has recently been making it’s rounds on social media sites and it is a true statement.  I grew up with parents who vaccinated me.  Bill grew up with parents who vaccinated him.  When we had David we took him in for vaccination shots – I believe it was at his year mark back then.  I took Tawny in for her shots when she was 6 months old, doing what I was told by my doctor, as the shots were ever changing.  When I was sitting in the waiting room I felt like a dark cloud envelope me and felt such an urgency to leave that room it couldn’t have been more powerful if I had been under water and needing air…I left right then! We are also told,

If we ignore or block out the promptings of the Spirit for whatever reason, they become less noticeable until we cannot hear them at all. Let us learn to hearken to the promptings of the Spirit and then be eager to heed them.

I had never even entertained the possibility of not getting my children shots before that, but I knew that it was something I needed to study out prayerfully now.  So Bill and I did, and we found that there are alternatives.  I learned about other ways to immunize my children against sickness and disease.  Back then we didn’t have computers or internet so we read and read.  We read books about why vaccinations could be dangerous, we read books on how we can build up our childrens’ defenses, and then we put those things we learned into motion.

Most who know us know that we do our best to eat as naturally as possible, organic when we can, meat very sparingly – to pretty much not at all now.  No refined sugars or processed products, at least in the home.  We learned how to use herbs and vitamins and stay far away from antibiotics and anything else that could harm our natural body’s defenses.

We have not had any second thoughts about it at all.  Our children have remained healthy and strong.  When they reached the age to go on missions they had the choice of getting their shots if they wanted to be considered for foreign missions, or not and staying state side.  My eldest 3 children have chosen to get the shots so they could leave the country if it came to that.  When Tawny got hers though, she was very ill for 3 months, I can’t imagine what the reaction would’ve been if she had those put into her body as a baby!  This option for missionaries to serve stateside without vaccinations makes me think that there is a choice for us.

I want to point out that in the article the church leaders urge us to immunize our children.  I feel like we have fully complied with that directive!  Dictionary.com says,

im·mu·nize

[im-yuh-nahyz, ih-myoo-nahyz]  verb (used with object), im·mu·nized, im·mu·niz·ing.

1.to make immune.
2.to render harmless or ineffective; neutralize.
3.Law. to grant (a witness) immunity.
I guess the only drawback to not vaccinating my children is the enmity it has caused between those who believe strongly in vaccinations and myself.  I am caught off guard at how much people hate that we have made this choice, and we have even lost some friendships over it.  That, to me, is a disease that can canker the mind and body -Could we develop a vaccination for hate?

A am pro-vaccination, however, I think it is very important to listen to the promptings of the Spirit. It is very telling how Tawny reacted to the vaccinations as an adult; you had that dark cloud feeling at the doctors office for a reason.
